Broadway Blake: “Yes He is Our Favorite Rapper”

Hoody Fatigue Fitted

Jersey Is Naked got to sit down with Jersey’s own underground jewel Broadway Blake!!! I am a little bias because he’s been “my favorite rapper” since Cypher Sundayz! He gave me the opportunity to dig in his crates and let us known how he feels about music and where he wants it go.

When is your earliest memory of music?

“I wanna say late 80’s early 90’s When Mike was making movies for videos. Mike was the man.”

Did you always want to rap or was it something that happened by mistake?

“Growing up I was heavy into sports, especially basketball so I can’t say that I always wanted to rap but it didn’t happen by mistake either. My best friend Poppy..rest his soul.. had this one verse he would always spit an it was so dope. He asked me and our other friend Leno to start rapping with him and we tried it out. Long story short it really felt like a natural progression because from my first verse and on they both felt like I can be the one to get over the “hump” and make a name for myself with music. So i started to take it serious and its been something I’ve been doing since.”

Now that you have been rapping in the underground community for a number of years are you anxious to be signed or do you like being independent?

“It really depends on the situation. If it comes down to an offer that I feel like I can’t refuse then I have to at least consider it. But the way the industry is going now the Independent route can end up being a great thing for you if you understand the business model, and that’s something I’ve been researching for a long time.”

What is your ultimate goal with music?

“I just wanna be ya favorite rapper. lol. Nah but I just want to tell my story and the story of kids like me. If it becomes something that I can make a living from in long run then great, if not that’s cool because I would do this even if it was never a possibility of getting paid from it anyway.”

What do you want the world to know about you through your music?

“Whatever they get from it. I write about my life, my feelings, my emotions. When I’m happy and celebrating you can hear it in certain songs. When I’m hurting I write about the pain. When I feel like I can reach out an uplift a lil bit that’s the type of song I write. So I just want them to take the parts that they can relate to and vibe with it.”

What do you think has changed in hip hop since the late 90’s til now?

“Less focus on lyrics. But it seems like the mainstream is becoming back open to more lyric driven artist. It’s a lot of other stuff that has changed but I can spend the whole time of this interview on that subject.”

Are there any rappers today who you respect more than rappers of the past dead or alive?

“I respect everybody who is moving the culture forward. Dead or Alive.”

What do you think about the respect between MC’s today vs before? Do you think personally that new comers are humble enough?

“I think some are humble and some really don’t care. They’re just embracing their movement and keeping it moving. I think it’s great when new artist pay homage but I don’t think they HAVE to do it in every interview or video or song.”

How do you stay humble in a rap world?

“I’m a humble person in general so its really just natural for me to pay homage and respect the people who paved the way.”

Last but not least Blake what do you want your legacy to be once your gone? What is the mark that you want to leave on the hip hop community?

“I want people to say that I really put on for the culture. I want people to say that I got better with time. I still have a lot of growing to do as an artist being that I’ve barely traveled and haven’t experienced a lot from other cultures of the world so I’m sure if I’m blessed to do that it will add to my story and legacy. I want fans to say they enjoyed my time hear and I want artist from all genres to say I inspired them in some type of way.”
