Carnival At Home! Mini Corn Dogs Recipe! (Photos Inside)

I don’t know about you but I mostly go to carnivals for the food. I remember when I was younger my mother and I use to wait for the carnival in Hillsborough,NJ because they had the best shish kabob and CORN DOGS! My mother and I use to buy tickets just to get all our carnival food favorites. We never stayed for the rides only for the food. Shameful but true lol. Let me tell you how I make it!

This is what you will need:

  • Hot Dogs
  • 3/4 Cups of Yellow Corn Meal
  • 2 Cups of Flour
  • 1/2 Cup of Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp of Salt
  • 1 Tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 and 1/2 Cups of Milk
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Onion
  • 1 Tsp Minced Garlic
  • Oil
  • Frying Pot or Deep Fryer
*This recipe makes about 50 mini hot dogs. Which is about five dinner sized hot dog links sliced thickly. If you want to make a personal serving cut the recipe in half.*
Heat the Oil

First you want to warm your deep fryer or frying pot with vegetable oil. You want the oil to stay at the 350 degrees point. Once you have the oil heating you want to start on your batter.

The Batter

In a large bowl combine the flour, corn meal, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Mix the dry ingredients until well incorporated. In another bowl mix the eggs, onion, garlic, and milk. You want to use a microplane to grate the onion and garlic. You want those fresh elements to just melt into the batter. Now combine wet and dry mixtures. The batter will be on the thick side which is perfectly fine. You will see a bright yellow corn meal color once everything is mixed together. Sit this to the side and prepare your hot dogs.

I found when cutting the links lined up against each other you get uniformed sizes. I just lined them up and cut across. Once you have them all cut, grab a ziplock bag and add 2 tbsp of flour inside. Place the hot dogs inside the bag and shake them. Make sure the hot dogs are lightly coated with flour. Flouring them first allows the batter to adhere better to the hot dogs.

Fry Time

Shake off the excess flour from the hot dogs and with a fork drop them into the batter. You want to coat them on all sides. The hot dog should be submerged into the batter. Once evenly coated place in the fryer with the fork. After 30 secs the corn dog will rise to the top of the oil. Once it rises it generally turns itself. You want to cook until golden brown on all sides. Do not walk away from them because they cook very quickly. I would say about 2 minutes.

***Warning be careful to not overload fryer with hot dogs because it will shoot down the oil temp. Do about five corn dogs at a time to get the oil temp high.****

On a plate let the excess oil drain from them for a moment. Then after a minute you can serve yourself. These corn dogs I promise will transport you to the carnival after the first bite. These are great and fast to make for entertaining company.

Dipping sauces that go great with these corn dogs are spicy mustard and ketchup. Enjoy the corn dogs with someone you love and that could be just yourself!
