Would You Marry Yourself?

The single bride of Houston has flooded the internet with her choice to marry herself. This story has left us all wondering and scratching our heads with this question. Why would anyone do this?

Now the last time we’ve seen this type of foolery was in 1996. Former NBA player Dennis Rodman married himself in a lavish ceremony. Rodman pulled up in a horse and carriage to a church in drag. He wore a big white wedding gown, a full face of make-up, and blonde hair. He made a complete spectacle of himself to declare he was bi-sexual. Well that was sort of a reason right?

Yasmin Eleby’s story was posted on Black Art in America before going viral. Eleby made a promise to herself that if she was 40 and not married she would marry herself. The ceremony included a walk down the aisle, vows, and a first dance. The ceremony was ministered by her sister and her other siblings stood in as bridesmaids.

Is anyone other than me curious about what her vows were? Or how about the part when they say you may now kiss the bride? Who did she kiss? So many questions I have about this craziness.

After reading some of the commentary about her actions some people applauded her, others laughed, and some felt sorry. I think this whole event was a cry for help. There are far other ways to show people you are okay even if you haven’t found someone to spend the rest your life with.

I don’t understand why people put added pressure on things that are not tangible. There are so many elements that are at play when trying to find a partner. How can you put an age on marriage when finding someone takes time?

The fact that her family enabled her in this madness is beyond me. Yes the promise of free food, liquor, and a good party is appealing but at what cost?

The act and ceremony of marriage is so spiritual and I don’t take that sort of thing lightly. The combining of lives under God despite the cake, first dance, dress, and the aisle walking is so small to what that day actually means.

Those things are material and just cloud your mind from what is really happening. I married my husband wearing a 20 dollar Wal-Mart peplum dress, beauty salon hair, and Steve Madden shoes. There was no wedding cake, no band, or bridesmaids.

Yet I don’t regret my choice because I would have married him in a wife beater and some sweatpants. The promises to him I made before God have nothing to do with the material things. If my friend called me and said Jersey I want to marry myself I would honestly think she was going through something mentally.

She could have celebrated her 40 years on earth without mocking the union of marriage. Marriage is supposed to be about the combining of lives not to soothe your mid-life crisis. Self-love is very important and healthy to have but so are boundaries. I think this event would have better been served as a birthday party not a wedding.

As for the single bride she will be honeymooning in Cambodia and then Dubai later this year. I hope she knows in advance you can’t bring sex toys to Dubai. I guess the only way she is making it passed second base is with her hand.

She may need this for the honeymoon.

Do you think this was Brave or Bitter?
