Drag’s Rising Star is Devine!

Devine on the NYC streets

Naked had the opportunity to sit down with one of NYC’s hottest upcoming drag stars Destiny Devine . She is an energetic fire-ball on stage embodying the spirit of Beyoncé through an upbeat theatrical performance. Dennis Williams the man behind the drag is a talented dancer, singer, and trained actor. He is a proud graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Williams has trained to be an entertainer since the age of five. We can safely say this queen is seasoned. Williams is currently working on his on production called “The Destiny Devine Experience”  This young starlet shared experiences of the drag world, difficulty with the other queens, and the importance of showing love.

When did you decide to do drag?

I started about 2 and a half years ago,  it just started because of my obsession with Beyoncé “Single Ladies”. I love her as a performer and an artist.

Who is Destiny Devine? How did she arrive in your life?

Destiny Devine is my best friend. I didn’t really change a lot about myself except my appearance and of course my performance. To sum that question up. Destiny is Dennis we work together as a team as one to not only create fierce performances but to change lives and to always spread love. OVERALL : A PERFORMER OF ALL POSSIBILITIES. I really got into it summer 2010. I was checking out Craigslist and I saw a posting for “DRAG SHOW “ICONS” in Province town mass for the summer and they were looking for a Beyoncé Impersonator.. so i went to audition. I said why not.

What was your first break into the drag industry?

The Spring of 2010.

Destiny Devine

What is the hardest part of the drag industry in your experience?

The hardiest part for me was in the beginning a lot of other drag performers weren’t really that nice. but i have to say, there were some really supportive people. Its a competitive business and I don’t really like to compete. Only thing I do is compete with myself. That’s only to make each performance the better than the last.

What is the best advice you can offer for someone who is trying to be in this industry? What should they watch for?

The best advice I can give is to always be YOURSELF and never let anyone tell you what you’re doing is wrong. Follow your heart and be true to who you are. Never try to bring others down to be on top. Soul search and find out who you are. Most importantly don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The best make mistakes. Be open to learning. :- ) Always have fun!

Lastly what legacy do you want to leave behind in your career?

That as Beyoncé would say” I WAS HERE”. I want my legacy to be that no matter if i was in a wig and heels or in high top sneakers, Dennis or Destiny, that I was always kind, and always spreading love. I know that in life we aren’t really able to decide what people say about us when were gone. I want everyone to know as I lay there cold and beautiful in my silver plated coffin these last words to the world and out nation: I LOVE YOU ALL, AND REMEMBER TO LOVE YOURSELVES, AND TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT ALWAYS. Know that I am physically gone but my heart and spirit will live on forever. Smile for I am always here by your side. I love you all, thank you for joining me experiencing my crazy life. Thank you for taking the ride! From the bottom of my heart! I LOVE YOU!XOXO
