Maple-Glazed Chicken Apple Sausage Bites!

It’s Food Friday and today I will be preparing Maple Glazed Apple Chicken Sausage Bites.

Last week I prepared Mandarian Apricot Chicken Wings which were delicious! I am so excited for this new recipe!

Better Homes and Gardens Recipe

1 12-16 Ounce Package of Chicken Sausage (Apple Flavor)
1/3 Cup Maple Syrup
1 Tablespoon Ground Mustard
2 Teaspoons of Cut Fresh Sage or 1/2 Teaspoon of Dried
16 to 12 Pretzel Sticks

I know I should be following the rules but I am rule breaker! The first rule I broke was  the sausage. In UAE I don’t have access to chicken apple flavored sausage so I made my own.

I started on this recipe a few days earlier to let the seasonings marry in my sausage mixture. After the sausage flavor developed I rolled them into balls and froze them until needed.

Also the recipe calls for pretzels. Instead I will be making roasted garlic and parmesan polenta. Polenta is very close to grits in taste with a beautiful yellow color. This recipe screamed breakfast to me so thats where my creativity took me.

I will be using the glaze as per the recipe and garnishing the finished dish with parsley. You are more than welcome to follow the recipe provided without my revisions. If you want to try making your own sausage here is an easy recipe here to follow.

Their way

Pre-heat the oven to 375 F. Cut the links into slices and place on a shallow baking pan. Then place in the oven for 8 minutes. While the sausages are cooking, prepare the maple glaze. Make the glaze by adding the maple syrup, ground mustard, and sage to a small bowl then mix.

Note:

I also added a 1/8 cup of white wine to the glaze. The white wine will balance the sweetness of the glaze. If you don’t want to use wine, chicken stock will do the just fine.

Once the 8 minutes has passed brush the glaze onto sausages. Then cook until the glaze is heated through another 8 minutes. Once heated through remove from the oven and use the pretzels as cocktail sticks for serving.

My Way

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Brown the sausage balls on top of the stove. Just move the balls around in a pan with a little butter and oil until you have a nice brown color around all sides. For even browning just shake the heat proof skillet so the balls flip on their own. Once browned place in the oven and let cook for 6 minutes.

While in the oven prepare the glaze. Adding the maple syrup, ground mustard, and sage to a small bowl. After six minutes glaze the chicken apple sausage balls. Place back in the oven to warm through for another 6 minutes.

Then serve over a garlic-parmesan polenta bed and garnish with parsley.
