Thrilla Sits Down With Naked…We Got Him To Bare It All

Thrilla
Naked had the opportunity to sit down with Jersey’s own Thrilla! He took some time to talk Hip Hop, Influences, and most importantly the mixtape Devil on My Shoulder. Check out what he had to say

Who is Thrilla? How did you get the name?

I’m from jerseycity ,nj….born and raised. Grew up in the dead smack of the hood..but i also had a good family background so i never fell to the streets,,only because i believe i was smarter than my peers who are no longer living or the ones who are incarcerated. My two closest friends are serving 34 and 30 years in federal prison. I pretty much had a good life.but when i hit the streets coming up I WAS IN THE STREETS.. doing what street niggaz do. I’m a father…im a man of respect. im a man of GOD who has the DEVIL on his shoulder at times. I used to go by the name SHARDCORE. In 2001 i was at DEf JAM record and the person i was working with presented my music to then vice president of DEF JAM ,Tina Davis…..currently Chris Brown’s manager.  She said that SHARDCORE sounded too scary. So i seeked to find a new name,, During one of my recording sessions….it just kind of flew out of my mouth. I was talking and i said “ITS THRILLA”. I didnt mean it as my name but it stuck.

When was the moment you knew you wanted to MC?

I knew i wanted to be an MC early on,,,,,i actually started writing raps at 7 years old and whole songs at 8. I would have two radios…one with an instrumental,,,and one with blank tape recording myself rapping over the instrumental.. I was good with audio as a lil boy …I always has my stuff mapped out..

Who were your biggest influences at the time?

I’m a product of the golden era. Kane, G Rap, LL, NWA, Rakim, TOO mnay to name. even the so so cats had a lil influnce on me..I was a lil dude loving that music…and i grew up on it. So i got alot from them. Im a student of the game.

What do you find to be the hardest part in Hip Hop today? Keeping it Real or going Commercial?

I done see either as hard to do. When you have “IT” ..it just flows. I can be both and prevail because I AM both. I’m  a hood nigga who enjoys listening to WHITE STRIPES, GREEN DAY, LINKIN PARK, I just heard some fly shit from JUSTIN BEIBER…im not just a “rapper” im a full blown “ARTIST”…Im in love with MUSIC.

Speaking of commercial what do you think of shows like Love and Hip Hop? Do you think it shows the other side of hip hop in a negative way?

I loved the LOVE and HIP HOP,,,,with Jim Jones,,,,not really feeling the Atlanta version. I think it just shows normal people who people think are

not normal doing what they do. I dont think it shows a negative light on hip hop. This is just life.

Being that this show is surrounded by women who is your favorite female MC and Why?

My favorite female MC “lyrically” is Foxy Brown…..whether or not she writes her own shit lol.  Shes just ill.

I do believe women have it hard in this male dominated industry.  This is a male dominated world so ultimately it trickles down to everything else like in the work force

Now lets talk about the mixtape Devil on my Shoulder, why did you name this project that? What is the message?

Yes.. (SHARDCORE : DEVIL ON MY SHOULDER) the mixtape…..It was originally just Devil on my shoulder…but i added Shardcore being that i know more people are familiar with my old name (SHARDCORE) so it made more sense marketing wise.  Also Shardcore was a mean dude,,, lol,,,he’s my bad side.. he’s loud instigating and confrontational,,,,he is actually the “Devil on my shoulder”. Dat boy get it “POPPIN”  lol.,,,,,Thrilla is more laid back and cool,,,,the newer mature me. Thrilla isnt gonna “squeeze” on you,,,,, he’ll get you “sent for”. but overall im a good dude. Plenty times there are good people who the devil just gets the best of sometimes. On this mixtape you will hear songs that say “lets get it what yall mo fo’s wanna do!!? Some of the songs you will hear will speak on how im “with it” but GOD still carries me. (ITS WHATEVER WHEN IM ROLLING, I AINT NEVER WITH NO HEART MANE,,,,,,DEVIL ON MY SHOULDER STILL HOLDING ON TO GOD’S GRACE)……This mixtape is a classic cd. I wanted to make it an album and i did so. I originally had 17 different songs for it. After being a few songs into it.. i noticed the theme and i wanted to stick to it. and i feel i captured the essence of the mixtape Title.  I TRULY couldn’t tell you my favorite…but “devil on my shoulder” , “hammer dance” , ”rain on me” , “Holy are you” .

If you could work with anyone dead or alive who would it be?

I would love to work Jay-Z…. I wish I could work with Kurt Kobain…he was dope. Im mad I cant do anything with Michael Jackson but I aspire to be someone that someone else would see in that light.

Outside of Hip Hop music who do you listen to for inspiration?

As noted earlier I love WHITE STRIPES, I’m really inspired by SO many artists that I cant think off top.

What is the hardest part about being an unsigned artist? and why?

I could be signed and not have anything. If i had 25 million in the bank i would be the hottest nigga around without being signed. So its more of your financial situation rather than being signed or unsigned.

As an MC what mark do you want to leave on the world?

In regard to the mark i would like to leave the world as an artist…I would love to reach, teach, captivate and motivate people from all walks to live and not just exist. I would love to inspire people from negative backgrounds that they can be good,,,even great.  When my name is spoken i would love for those people to mention how great I was or am as an artist.  Also I would like to leave behind a legacy that of greats like Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur.  I would love that when im no longer actively putting out music that my  music will continue to play as if I was still active.
