Mona, the queen of ratchet reality television has now crossed the line with her new reality show Sorority Sisters. The show follows about 6 different women from different sorority’s living their dreams in Atlanta, GA.

Multiple petitions have been placed forward to have the show cancelled on behalf of the African-American Greek organizations. Was the show really that bad or are they trying to hide the realness within the sisterhood?

I watched the show and it wasn’t that bad. It was just a bunch of catty women who happened to be apart of a sorority. It also showed the judgemental qualities within these sisterhoods. Things I am sure the African-American Greek system would like to keep secret. The stereotypes of the African-American sorority’s go back as far as School Daze. Where were those petitions then? Good or Bad Hair Anybody?

Veronica of Zeta Phi Beta introduces her known sorority stereotypes first as “As chunky girls and plain janes”. As soon as she said it the alarm in my head went off screaming “body issues”. To prove her disdain for overweight people when she met with Shannon who was introduced as the “white” Delta Veronica was less than nice.

Shannon hired Veronica as a stylist. She then revealed she was a size 18 and now a size 7. Instead of Veronica extending a congratulations all she did was repeat “Wow that is like a small child! It’s almost like a whole other person.”

Shannon smiled it off but I am sure her comments made her feel uncomfortable. Then Veronica said “your problem is basically you can’t stop dressing like a big girl”. She was starting to piss me off as if there is only one type of beauty. She came off like a real asshole to me.

As the show progressed there was some bickering between a AKA and some Delta’s over their rival fashion boutiques ending with a five dollar dress being thrown in front of a store.

The first episode wasn’t all that bad and I don’t think it’s imagery is bad enough to be cancelled due to the petition. These women are clearly in their late 20’s and early 30’s. So they fight with an exchange of words. I haven’t seen anything physical as of yet.

In my experience that level of cattiness in those organizations are VERY real. After doing my research I actually wanted to pledge Delta. Their message and reputation was very attractive to me. When I attended LIU I actually went to a meeting to start the process in 2007.

I was so excited but that all came to an end when I attended the meeting. Now I don’t think this reflects badly on the sorority but on the people who were representing them at the time.

When I showed up at the gathering no one would talk to me. I felt judge right off by the scanning eyes and whispers. I am a chunky girl with a big personality. I spoke to some of the members of the sorority and they just weren’t friendly. I couldn’t understand if their whole stand point is always about “service”.

Being a helping hand within the community. I was very confused by the message and what I was getting due to the selective conversations they were having with other women outside of me. I love philanthropy and honestly that was my draw to Delta.

Even though the meet and greet sucked I continued onto the Q&A part. During that portion of the meeting I had concerns about hazing. Hazing had become very popular for all the wrong reasons. Students were dying to prove loyalty to a organzations they may not crossover to.

So I started to ask questions about rules they had in place to protect those in the process of joining and they refused to answer. As I pressed for a clear answer on my safety I was still left with no information that made me feel secure. At that point I walked out of the meeting.

The woman who was heading it then said as I walked through the doorway “Everyone is not Delta material.” When I heard her I turned around and said “Maybe I’m not because my safety will always come before anything and everything including the Divine 9.”

My story is in no way to crap on them as sorority but to shed light that sometimes the wrong people can turn something positive into a negative.

Watch the episode for yourself and tell me is it too much?
